Federal regulations require tow truck drivers to have a commercial driver’s license for freight weighing more than cargo 26,000 pounds. In addition, some states and municipalities require a commercial driver’s license for all tow truck operators. To obtain a commercial driving license, a driver must attend an accredited training course and pass a written test and a driving test.
Several organizations offer certification for tow truck drivers. Certification from these organizations generally requires coursework or current employment as a tow truck driver, an application, paying a fee and passing an exam.
Some employers do not require certification but as a general rule, being certified is a plus when it comes to finding employment.
